Pony Express Riders Gallop into Elko
The National Pony Express Association (NPEA) Convention returns this year to the historic American West, taking place September 5–6, in Elko, Nevada. Hosted by the National Pony Express Association, this annual gathering brings together history buffs, equestrian enthusiasts, and Re-Ride riders from across the nation to celebrate and preserve the legacy of the legendary Pony Express.
A highlight of this year’s convention is the public event on Friday, September 5, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM at the California Trail Interpretive Center, just west of Elko. This free, family-friendly celebration invites locals and visitors alike to step back in time and witness the reenactment of a mochila exchange—a live changing of the mail saddlebag carried by riders, just as it was done during the original Pony Express of 1860–61.
The California Trail Center event will feature:
• A live mochila exchange by the Pony Express Riders
• Living history displays
• Pony Express: Living the Ride – A Documentary Film
• Meet-and-Greets with Pony Express riders
• Educational booths about the Pony Express and California Trail history
• Information on becoming a member – ride in the annual Re-Ride!
The full two-day convention also includes member-only sessions, historical presentations, and awards recognizing dedication to preserving the Pony Express legacy. However, the Friday Trail Center event is open to all and offers an unforgettable experience for families, history fans, and travelers.
