Trail Talk: Exploring the John Day Trail
Submitted by Friends of the Ruby Mountains
With school out for summer, many families might want to find a trail that is close to town, short in length, and not crowded. The 2 mile long John Day Trail north of Lamoille is one trail that meets all three criteria. (4 miles round trip) The trailhead is located approximately 13 miles from the town of Lamoille. Head north out of town on the Lamoille/Fort Halleck Road for 10 miles. Here you will come to an open gate on the right side of the road. Turn here and drive approximately 3 miles along Soldier Creek until you reach the trailhead which is on the right side of the road. The trail sign is currently missing so look closely for the small parking area. The trail climbs steeply for the first quarter mile as it climbs out of Soldier Canyon where the trail reaches the divide between Soldier Creek and John Day Creek. Once in the John Day drainage the trail grade drops to an easy uphill slope. The trail winds it way through aspen stands and open slopes as it follows John Day Creek. There are also 2 creek crossings that are a nice place to stop and have a snack. You will also see plenty of wildflowers in early July. Overall, this is an easy hike for families and offers a pleasing change from the popular trails in Lamoille Canyon.
Happy Trails and remember to practice Leave No Trace!
