Prom Closet

Prom Closet boutique

Friday, February 20, from 3-5 p.m.

Submitted by Kaitlyn McLeod, CIS

Last March, AM Beauty Institute was buzzing as Elko County students searched through racks of dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories at Communities In Schools (CIS) of Northeastern Nevada’s Prom Closet. For many students, it meant stepping into prom feeling confident, prepared, and excited.

We’re gearing up to do it all again—and bigger! Now in its fifth year, Prom Closet provides free formalwear, beauty tutorials, and gift cards to local salons, florists, and restaurants so every student can enjoy a full prom experience. What started as a small rack of dresses has turned into a full boutique-style shopping event thanks to amazing community support. Last year, over 241 donated items helped outfit 60 students—and we’re aiming even higher in 2026!

A huge shoutout to everyone who helps make Prom Closet happen year after year—our generous community members, incredible local businesses, AM Beauty Institute, and the Elko Area Chamber. Because of you, students don’t just attend prom—they walk in feeling celebrated.

Want to Be Part of the Fun? Here’s How to Help (now through February 20):

• Donate gently used or new prom dresses, suits, pants, ties, jackets, shoes, and accessories

• Donate gift cards for hair, makeup, or salon services

• Donate restaurant gift cards so students can enjoy dinner before prom

Drop-Off Locations:

• AM Beauty Institute: 2186 Idaho Street, Elko

• Elko Area Chamber of Commerce: 1405 Idaho Street, Elko

The Prom Closet Boutique opens to students on Friday, February 20, from 3–5 p.m. at AM Beauty Institute and will include beauty tutorials, giveaways, and plenty of excitement.
