Saddle Up and Volunteer for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering!

By Jerod Linder (Volunteer Coordinator)

Yeehaw! The Western Folklife Center is seeking volunteers for the 40th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, January 27 -February 1, 2025. This weeklong event is a grand celebration of cowboy country’s rich poetry, music, and art. More than 350 volunteers help out at the Gathering every year, working in a variety of roles, including door monitors, loggers, shuttle drivers, and gallery docents. Volunteers receive free passes, work with other dedicated people, and get to meet the poets and musicians performing at the event.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteers lend a hand with just about everything, from taking tickets to creating stages to helping guests and artists. And much more! By volunteering, you contribute directly to our mission and support rural culture. Plus, it’s a great way to connect with fellow Gathering-goers. Opportunities are available the week of the Gathering (and even earlier!). Here’s a glimpse into the experiences of past volunteers at the Gathering.

“I volunteer at the Gathering to give back to the event, but I also really enjoy meeting new people. I love the excitement the Gathering brings, and I get to watch shows, listen to poets, and also participate, contributing back to the event. I am a believer in celebrating our western culture.” – Susan

“We really enjoy the atmosphere of the event and like being around the cattle people and we’ve made a lot of great friends in thirty some years of coming to the Gathering. We look forward to this event all year long.” – Steve & Cheri

What To Expect

We have a range of volunteer roles to fit everyone’s interests. Whether you love interacting with people, or enjoy preparing artist packets, there’s a spot for you. Some of the roles include:

  • Guest Services: Welcome attendees, provide recommendations around Elko, and ensure everyone has a great time.
  • Door Monitor and Ticket Taker: Take tickets, monitor for day passes, and direct attendees to their seats.
  • Logger: Record basic information about each poem or musical piece performed in a given session.
  • Docent: Mingle through the gallery and answer questions from patrons, clean display cases, and make sure all equipment is in working order.
  • Shuttle Driver: Transport artists, event staff, and patrons between venues during the weeklong event.

The Perks

Volunteering isn’t just about giving; it’s also about receiving. As a thank you for your time and effort, volunteers will receive:

  • Deluxe pass with access to any non-ticketed daytime shows Thursday through Saturday.
  • A commemorative pin and program book.
  • Discount to the Western Folklife Center Gift Shop.
  • A chance to meet and interact with performers and organizers.
