Trail Talk
Welcome to the first article in a new series called “Trail Talk”. The Friends of the Ruby Mountains will be publishing articles throughout the year that focus on local hiking opportunities, outdoor tips, and more. With the majority of our hiking trails inaccessible due to snow in January we wanted to focus on the trails at South Fork State Recreation Area. The staff has developed over 10 miles of walking paths that are usually accessible year round. These trails are open to walkers, bicycles, and horses. When there is enough snow, the trails are perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. These trails are rated as easy due to very little elevation gain and the smooth trail surface with no obstacles. This makes it perfect for users of all ages. One favorite trail is the Humboldt Loop Trail. It is located upstream of the reservoir and is adjacent to the South Fork of the Humboldt River. It is approximately 3 miles in length. One bonus is there is no entrance fee at the trailhead parking lot. Hikers can see mule deer, coyotes, porcupines, beaver and many species of birds. It is always good to check the park website or call ahead and get the latest on conditions before heading out – https://parks.nv.gov/parks/south-fork or (775) 744-4346
