Trail Talk: Zunino Jiggs Reservoir
Submitted by Friends of Ruby Mountain
Spring is here, and for many of us that means getting outside and recreating on our public lands. Preparing for your first outing ahead of time will make for an enjoyable trip without any issues. Here are a few tips to think about –
Inspect your gear. Daypacks, boots, headlamps, etc should all be in working order. Replace shoe laces, and batteries. Mend any tears and holes in clothing and packs.
Research the area for your first trip. Consider weather, access, closures, and terrain. Contact the local agency for site specific details. Do not forget to get hard copy or electronic maps the trip.
Check in with your body. Make sure you are comfortable with the physical demands of your outing. Be conservative and identify safety trigger points for adjusting your activities. Examples can cover air temperature, precipitation, trail miles, and your energy level.
If you are also looking for an area to explore, consider Zunino Jiggs Reservoir. This BLM Recreation Area is readily available in April given its low elevation, and paved access. The reservoir provides for bird watching, fishing, and boating. The network of local dirt roads provide fun opportunities for biking and off-roading. Semi-developed campsites are suited for trailer, car, and tent camping. A bonus is the dark skies that make star gazing exceptional. Plan to bring your own drinking water. A bonus are the low daily use fee of $5.00. Located approximately 30 miles from Elko makes for an easy drive. Contact the BLM at 775 753-0200 for more information.
Until next time, Happy Trails!
