Celebrating 95 Years

J.M. Capriola Co. isn’t just a store; it’s a journey through time, a testament to family, and a celebration of the West. Their story starts over a century ago, intertwined with the legendary Garcia saddlery.

Joseph Martin Capriola, once an apprentice at Garcia’s, returned to Elko in 1924, his love for leatherwork reignited. He began small, taking on repairs in a rented space. Business boomed, and by 1929, the Capriola family was running their own shop at the 500 Commercial Street location. They even sold Garcia bits and spurs, a nod to their shared history.

The decades that followed saw the business passed down through generations. Joseph E. and his wife Rosie partnered with Joseph Martin, then Frank Jayo took the helm for a brief period. In 1958, after Frank Jayo’s unexpected passing, Paul and Betty Bear, a couple with a deep love for ranching & cowboying, stepped in and purchased the store. Their children, Bob, Bill & Paula, grew up immersed in the world of saddles, bits, spurs & ranching.

The story takes a familiar turn in 1972 when Paul and Betty Bear’s children became involved in the business. Paula, alongside her husband Doug Wright, eventually purchased Capriola’s in 1985. Today, their son John and his wife Susan carry on the legacy with their children Charlie and Audrey.

Through it all, one thing remained constant: a dedication to quality and handcrafted tradition. John embodies this spirit perfectly. Recognizing the importance of the Garcia line, John, along with skilled silversmith Jon Peters, brought production back to Elko, Nevada in 2020. This homecoming wasn’t just about location; it was about reviving the tradition of crafting Garcia bits and spurs in Elko. However, they didn’t simply replicate the past. John and Jon ensured the designs were adapted and refined to meet the needs of modern-day horses and cowboys.

As Nevada’s oldest Western store, J.M. Capriola Co. offers more than just merchandise; it’s an immersive experience. Visitors can witness the magic of Oscar’s intricate leatherwork firsthand, or explore a treasure trove of unique gifts, apparel, and jewelry that capture the spirit of the West.
