I would like to start with introducing myself. I am a Boutique owner, Rancher and Mother.
In 2007, I started up Buckaroo Boutique. My inspiration has always been fashion that is fun, unique and affordable but good quality. My influence comes from being a Mom, sports Mom and rancher.
I grew up in Colorado around some agriculture but never to the extent that I live now. My husband grew up on large outfits in Nevada, growing up mainly on the TS ranch near Battle Mountain. We were married in 2008 and we now have three boys.
My husband and I have been Ranching for a good portion of our marriage. We have worked for local ranchers in assisting with their herd and land. In 2016, we started to acquire our own cows and we have been growing ever since. We live in Starr Valley Nevada on Schaad Ranches, my husband manages the ranch and I am his worker bee!
In total we run around 600 head of cows on the ranch. Our year consists of feeding in the winter, using large feed wagons and feeding by hand in some areas. We start calving around mid March and have about 60-75 day calving time frame. When calves are born, we tag them so that we can know who their mom is and helps with any identification needed throughout the year.
When spring hits, we are moving cows to start their summer grazing season. We host multiple brandings starting in May. During branding season, we invite friends and family to help with vaccinating calves, branding them and it’s a great way to see all our calves after we turn them out and just make sure they are all doing well.
Once June hits, we are turning bulls out with cows, AI-ing our young first time heifers and prepping for hay season. Through the summer months, we are busy haying the ranch and shifting cows around.
Then Fall, we are gathering cows, weaning and processing calves and preg checking cows. We monitor calves after they are weaned to watch for their health and doctor any that may become sick. November or December, calves are shipped to our sister ranch in California to winter there. Then we start all over with feeding cows.
We also have a small herd of sheep and our kids raise pigs and beef for our local FFA and Fair.
In the mix of all the busy ranch activities, I am busy running the boutique. It’s an online boutique and we had a beautiful space in Elko to call home for 6.5 years. We just recently moved the store to Wells to be closer to the ranch and all our kids sports and school activities.
As a family, we love being able to work together. We put in some long days, but we are so honored to be able to be a small part of the AG industry in Northern Nevada. I really enjoy sharing our daily adventures on social media because education of where our food comes from is very important to me.
You can follow our ranch adventures @thayshagroves on Instagram. If you are a fashion lover, we would love a follow on @buckarooboutique also!
I wanted to thank Elko for an amazing 6.5 years in our store front. We had so much support locally. You can still shop with us online or come see us in our new location in Wells!
