Kinross Nevada Igloo Ice Skating Rink

The Elko Hockey Association and Kinross Nevada hosted the grand opening of the Kinross Nevada Igloo ice skating rink on January 21st 2022. The event proved to be a resounding success. From mid morning until the late afternoon, open skating, hockey games, food, and prizes were enjoyed by all at the Kinross Nevada Igloo Recreation Center located at 1515 Silver Street, Elko, Nevada. Each of these events culminated in an exhilarating experience nestled within northeastern Nevada.

The grand opening ceremony started with Matt Burwell, president of the Elko Hockey Association, giving a heartfelt speech and traditional ribbon cutting. Matt Burwell and volunteers have been working on the ice rink since its inception to create something truly special. Without the time, effort, and dedication put in by Matt Burwell, volunteers, and donors, the construction of the ice rink would not have been possible. The Elko Hockey Association would like to extend its gratitude to everyone who helped in this endeavor to make the ice rink a reality.

A wildly popular open skate followed the grand opening ceremony. The community showed up in force, renting out all skate sizes 5 and up. Whether a complete beginner or an experienced veteran, all levels of skill were on display by those who participated during the open skate. After the grand opening, open skating will be held on Saturdays from 5:00pm to 8:00pm (weather permitting) until the end of March. Open skate costs $7 per skater per hour, skate rentals cost $5.

Old Timey Ice Cream was on hand at the grand opening as well, serving a wide variety of foods such as sandwiches, body-warming soups, and mouth-watering desserts. In addition, Indar Soccer provided scrumptious fresh tamales, posole, and tacos as a fundraiser.

Prizes included a hockey puck and hockey stick signed by the Las Vegas Golden Knights which were graciously donated by Kinross Nevada and Elko Broadcasting. The prize pool was able to raise $500 in a raffle for these items, which will help support the Elko Hockey Association provide more skates, facility improvements, and other amenities needed for skaters. Congratulations to those who won the raffle, and thank you to everyone who contributed!

Finally, the Elko Hockey Association hockey games were hosted for 8 and under, 14 and under, high school, and adult recreation league. These fierce battles for control of the puck went on until the end of the event which saw great participation from each level. A special thanks to all of the coaches, players, referees, and volunteers for manning a competitive evening.

The grand opening event has concluded however; the ice rink will remain with plenty of opportunities to enjoy what it has to offer. For more information on future events, joining a league, open skate days, and all other inquiries Elko Hockey Association’s contact information is:
