The story of Communities In Schools began in the 1970’s when Founder Bill Milliken, then a youth advocate in New York City, came up with the idea of bringing community resources inside a public school building – where they are accessible, coordinated and accountable. In the span of a little more than 30 years, Communities In Schools has become the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization. We have a unique model that positions a Site Coordinator inside schools to assess needs and deliver necessary resources that remove barriers to success.

Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Although this year started out different than any other, our mission was more important than ever.  Our team was eager to be back and ready to face the unknown. We knew everything would look different this year. There would be no in-person team building and trainings. We would not be able to gather and host our annual fundraiser, A Nite At The Races. And we would not have the excitement of catching up with our students on the first day of school.

Our students had a whole new adventure awaiting them as well. There were so many uncertainties that came with virtual learning and hybrid learning. We were all swimming in uncharted water and had to adapt to the new environment. There were so many unforeseen challenges, but our Site Coordinators were there to help. From handing out Chrome books, to making calls home, or distributing supplies, our Site Coordinators were doing #Whateverittakes to break down barriers and help connect students to any needs they had to help them succeed. We have already connected our students with multiple supports this year. Some of those supports are listed below:

• 103 Emergency Food Boxes

• 2,261 weekend food bags

• 577 units of clothing, including socks, underwear, hats, gloves, coats, snow boots, shirts, and pants

• 171 hygiene items

• 185 backpacks full of school supplies

• 624 additional school supplies

• 247 School Supply Packs for West Wendover Elementary

• 50 bus passes

• 127.5 hours of one-on-one tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club

• 66 scheduled telehealth appointments

Our team remains dedicated to our mission and the work we have ahead of us. There is a burning passion inside each one of our Site Coordinators to help our students succeed through one of the most unpredictable years of their young life.
