It’s that time of the year again when we evaluate our services over the last year and reach out to the community to say thank you! It amazes me that Friends In Service Helping has been serving Elko County for over 30 years in Elko. We aim to alleviate suffering within our community by serving families in our foodbank, soup kitchen, emergency shelter, warming shelter, providing financial and rental assistance, issuing clothing and houseware vouchers, as well as hygiene and laundry assistance. Our mission at Friend In Service Helping is something that is always in the back of my mind as we start each day. Our mission is “to determine and provide for the needs of individuals seeking urgent or supplemental assistance in the Elko County and surrounding Northeastern Nevada. Through compassionate service, we strive toward a goal of renewed hope, dignity, and self-sufficiency for all.”
In my 3 years here I have seen many faces of the most food insecure and vulnerable. They are the clients who rely on us for a soup kitchen lunch, a shower and supplemental food. They are the clients that do their laundry here and those that need clothing to survive. Although we offer these services to all those in need, these daily visitors are why I feel the most compelled to do my job.
When someone comes to Friends In Service Helping, I hope they get a warm meal and a hot shower, but most of all I hope they feel love and like they matter.
Recently, we have had the privilege to help more with homeless prevention in the community. It has been touching to spread over $8,000 in rental assistance funds into the community and see families get into their own home. When we open our doors each day and give these basic life necessities to our clients I feel like we are making a difference. You are making a difference through your loyal support and we thank you for being that difference to someone. Today, I would like to ask you to be part of the change in a family’s life. After all, I think Kathy Calvin says it best, “Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference.”
Your support is greatly appreciated.
