International Women’s Day
“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made,” the important words by late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg has become an anthem for women not only in the United States but globally. From the stay-at-home mom creating schedules for four children, while juggling schooling, dance classes, karate, and virtual science fairs, to the entrepreneur who owns her business and is working hard to make sure that she is managing her employees, marketing her products, meeting with clients, while also finding time for her family. The celebration of these women and all of them on the spectrum around the world is what every March 8th is in recognition of.
The first gathering was held in 1911 for International Women’s Day and has been held annually since then. It is a day of celebration of women’s accomplishments, to raise awareness for gender equality, lobby for gender parity, and also to help fund raise for women’s charities. This year the theme for the day was ‘Choose to Challenge’.
Reaching up for equality and gender parity is a remarkable thought when over the last year women have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics shows that women accounted for significantly more of the job losses than men. In the reporting that was from February 2020 through December 2020 women lost 5.3 million jobs while men lost 4.6 million jobs. This is largely due to women being forced to leave the workforce due to lack of childcare during the pandemic. When forced to make the difficult choices on how they will manage virtual learning for their children and still maintain a career, family has won for these women. It is estimated that it will take decades for women to regain the ground that they had made in the labor force.
During a small roundtable discussion we held on March 8th this year with women leaders in our community we found first and foremost GREAT women! Also shared desires to help build our community and each other. During a time where we have been limited on fellowship, being able to share ideas, concerns, and to find people that were as passionate about making their businesses and Elko successful was incredible. We very much appreciated everyone who helped us and participated. These are the women who are making waves in the world. As the saying goes, “Here’s to Strong Women. May we know them, May we be them, May we Raise them.” Thank you all for supporting us and being the Good Neighbors throughout the community daily.
