Kathryn Grider – Northeastern Nevada Featured Artist

Contributed by Susanne Kaime Reese

Kathryn Grider is a well-known and respected Northeastern Nevada landscape painter. Her great desire to capture the beauty and soul of nature, her perseverance, years of hard work and study, have culminated in a substantial portfolio and body of work to be proud of. Her medium of choice is oil paint.

Kathryn’s quest to express her thoughts and communicate her emotions through art is an interesting story and a great life lesson to us all. She remembers after moving to Elko 31 years ago, she attended Art in the Park that first summer and purchased paintings on a payment plan from Jan Cicle, an artist living in Twin Falls, Idaho. Every month when Kathryn would send a payment for her art, she would ask Jan if she would teach her how to paint. Cicle finally agreed and for two years Kathryn drove round-trip at least once a month to paint with her. Her initial classes were very basic and she taught every single step down to what exact colors to mix and how to apply the paint strokes on canvas. Practice improved skills and Kathryn’s unique style emerged. It was a good beginning.

Kathryn attended college classes at Great Basin College, studied a year of Art History, and improved her drawing skills and watercolor paintings with instructors, Patty Fox and Sarah Sweetwater. She credits a workshop in 2009, saying it was a major turning point in her art, developing her signature style and technique with a California artist, Kathleen Dunphy. Her learning experience was so positive that Kathryn returned again the following year to participate in another workshop with her. In 2014, she enrolled in a Jean Legassick workshop in Hope Valley. Both artists are plein air painters and taught techniques for painting landscape reality and clever use of the properties of light.

Kathryn recently attended a three week, Virtual Intensive Workshop with Utah artist John Poon and promises she will forever be a student, always learning and putting in those brush miles to keep growing as an artist, every day.
