October Hauntings, stories and tales…Celebrating Nevada Day…
also known as Halloween.

Stories from Elko County’s past will come alive during the last two weekends in October with the Ninth Annual Elko Downtown Business Association’s Ghost Tour. Dates for this year are October 19,20 and 21 and October 26,27 and 28. Adult liquid refreshments and appetizers will be served. Attendees must be 21 and over. The Tours begin at Living Stones Church and then rotate to the Stockmen’s Hotel, Stage Door Theater and wraps up at Rubies Sports Bar. Tickets are $40 and only available online at the Downtown Business Association website: http://elkodowntown.org

This year’s Ghost Tours feature colorful and sometimes, grisly, stories from Elko County’s past told in first person by local personalities. The evening begins with Kim Otheim relating a story from a 1923 Fallon newspaper. Then, Sharon Owen will tell the story of the murder of her husband, George Washington Mardis near Island Mountain in 1880. The killer is discovered in a most intriguing way. Next is James Glennon relating the death of the first law officer in Elko County killed in the line of duty in August of 1869 during Elko County’s first year. The third stop features the murder of an Italian miner near Bullion in 1887, as told by Delmo Andreozzi. The tour wraps up with the story and ultimate demise of a true western desperado, Rattlesnake Dick as told by Scott Glennon or Derek Burwell. Jan Petersen will be the host for the evening.

These stories are actual events and true stories (some too incredible to be made up). It’s the DBA’s pleasure to present our community and downtown heritage. It’s important to share these stores to keep them alive….and it’s a lot of fun to learn these parts of our past.

The Elko DBA is a group of varied business owners located in downtown Elko. We are passionate about our beautiful city and want to see our downtown grow and prosper! Our goal is to promote a thriving economy through community events such as the Ghost Tour, Snowflake Festival, Wine Walks on second Saturdays, beautification and advertising.
